How the FDM rapeseed oil price is set

In short

Physical FDM rapeseed oil has no single exchange price. Its value is published every day by price reporting agencies (Argus, Quantum and Platts), based on what buyers, sellers and brokers report, and traded prices on multi-broker screens give a live benchmark. The CME’s European rapeseed oil futures settle against the Argus assessment.

The daily assessments

  • Argus has assessed the physical FOB Dutch mill rapeseed oil market since 2010. Its daily assessment is based on discussions with a wide range of buyers, sellers and trading intermediaries.
  • Quantum publishes a daily cash assessment of crude rapeseed oil FOB Dutch mill, in euros per tonne, for forward periods from the month ahead to twelve months ahead, timed at 16:30 London.
  • Platts publishes a crude rapeseed oil FOB Dutch mill assessment, launched in 2023, based on the FEDIOL crude degummed specification and NOFOTA trading rules, in euros per tonne at 16:30 UK time.

Prices on screen

On a multi-broker trading screen, firm bids, offers and trades are visible to everyone on it, which gives the market a live traded price to benchmark against. See our trading platform.

What moves the price

Rapeseed oil competes with other vegetable oils, so its price tends to move with palm and soyabean oil. Demand from biodiesel links it to energy prices, and the size of the European rapeseed crop affects how much oil the mills have to sell.
